For RAG week 2018 we approached a Cotswolds-based artist to create a memorable artwork for permanent display at the University.
Artist Teddy M has created art guitars played by Ed Sheeran on both his X and Divide world tours, he is the first contemporary artist to paint with members of the Royal family and last year, created the Range Rover art car. Once described by GQ magazine as ‘The Artist to Watch,’ Teddy M’s work has recently been praised by fashion icon and notable art collector Tommy Hilfiger and his client base includes FIAT heir Lapo Elkann, Ferrari’s head of design Flavio Manzoni, world re-knowned mountaineer Kenton Cool and a handful of Hollywood stars.
With the RAG week artwork, I wished to add an element of humour using the ‘Motorcycle Club' badges to evoke the decades old perception of the college as a club for Hellraisers, while the choice of colour reflects the bright and bold academia of the University as it is today. The piece also features my ‘Teddy M Heart’ design first used on Ed Sheeran’s guitar and which later formed the basis of my painting with Royalty.
The Artist is very familiar with the University and once used the basement, a place he affectionately calls the ‘dungeon’ as a practice room for his rock band. Students from the late 90’s may recall the same rock n’ roll band (Lesbian Fruit) performing annually at the field barn and May Ball events.
